Abstract
Lime renders play an important role in the preservation and conservation of historical masonries from an aesthetical point of view and to promote the hardening and higher strength of masonries against deterioration, increasing their durability. However, the development of cement, the trend towards reducing construction time and boosted “industrial” techniques and materials has provoked the lack of use of lime renders and the loss of knowledge and experience about those.
In this research, a comparative analysis of classical buildings and architecture treatises was developed, as well as standards, bibliography and new researches in different countries in order to characterize renders. It is not only from a theoretical point of view but also from practical experience in laboratory and craftsmanship.
A review about their compatible characteristics such as materials, composition, mixing ratios and properties of the different layers of which renders consist, depending on the location of the building, allows us to arise recommendations to design suitable ones.
