Abstract

Fifteen single-block specimens and seventeen two-block prisms with three different concrete infill conditions (unfilled, partially, and completely filled) have been tested for strength and strain performance when axially loaded in a direction parallel to the bed face. The specimens simulate the top compression zone in a reinforced masonry beam or part of a masonry wall subjected to horizontal forces in its own plane during an earthquake. The paper gives results and recommends methods to determine the ultimate masonry compressive strength fa, and the ultimate strain em values to be used in the strength design theory for masonry elements.
