Abstract
The paper considers the necessary requirements for the determination of the material properties of the voussoirs of masonry arches. The variation in ultimate load resulting from reasonable changes in the arch ring properties and the initial state of these redundant structures is investigated. This is undertaken by consideration of the effects on one of the arches recently loaded to destruction. The value of insitu tests is clearly indicated.
