Abstract
The current British Standard for sands for masonry mortars includes an S (structural) grade and a finer G (general) grade. However, the Code of Practice for structural use of masonry, is based on mortars using S grade sands. The work described was conceived to provide relevant parameters for two sands at the ends of the grading spectrum to see if any problem of safety existed and to furnish a data base for possible future performance standards which would allow better design of mortars for particular requirements. This paper covers only structural aspects but is linked by common sands and mortar formulations to other work on durability.
