Abstract

A proposed new approach for the design of masonry members in compression has already been developed for loading within the kern of the section. This paper extends that approach and considers solid waits and columns loaded at high eccentricities such that tension is developed in the masonry. The paper develops both the geometric and structural properties of cracked sections for the practical range of eccentricity ratios, assuming a “no tension” material and a structural model where the eccentricity varies linearly from the top of the wall to become zero at the base.
