Abstract
The use of basements in domestic dwellings is likely to increase in the coming years as land prioces rise. Satisfactory design of basement walls requires knowledge of the pressures acting on the walls from the surrounding soil. This paper considers simple approaches to assessing the likely pressures on basement walk for typical UK soil conditions, including the effects of vehicle loading and highlights the need for further research in this area. The importance of construction procedures and workmanship are stressed.
