Abstract

The recent development of numerical methods to predict cracking of masonry due to loading by shear and in-plane horizontal tension has led to quite complex models with limited opportunities for experimental verification. In this paper, an easily accessible micro-level model is developed and implemented in a finite element programme. Units are modelled as elastic-brittle and mortar joints as Coulomb type friction interfaces exhibiting shear softening. Model parameters can be obtained from tension tests on units and deformation-controlled shear tests on mortar joints. Comparison with test results shows that the model can realistically describe the behaviour of masonry walls subjected to simultaneous vertical pre-compression and horizontal shear.
