Abstract
During the Autumn of 1987 a questionnaire was forwarded to various Engineering Consultants, Architects and Contractors. The purpose was to ascertain the situation concerning the current applications of retaining wall structures in the construction industry. The results were analysed and an examination made of the different types of retaining walls used, with particular focus on reinforced and non-reinforced brickwork retaining walls. The survey was also designed to highlight problems encountered in the design of retaining walls and failures which had occurred in completed structures.
