Abstract
To satisfy planning requirements and make the project economically viable, clear spans of up to 9m were necessary, supporting very heavy loads within a maximum theoretical structural zone at floor level, 250mm deep. This was achieved by vertically prestressing both party and external brick walls, to make them self-supporting, storey height, brick girders. The design, detail and construction of the brick girders and associated structural brickwork is described and illustrated.
