Abstract
A durability teat, based on one developed at the Building Research Establishment’s (BRE) laboratory to assess the relative durability of masonry mortars, was drawn up by CEN Mortar Testing and has been considered for CEN Masonry Cements. The role of entrained air is a crucial element in determining mortar durability and this paper describes the application of the BRE test to different mortar types over a wide range of air contents. The performance of mortars made with sulfate resisting Portland cement:sand + air-entraining agent is compared with those made with OPC:lime:sand + air-entraining agent.
