Abstract
A strut and tie model is defined that simulates the behaviour of a masonry panel subject to a constant vertical load and to an increasing horizontal force acting in plane. This model permits plotting the horizontal force – displacement curve of the panel in uncracked, cracked and post – cracking phases (capacity curve). The model has been developed for a use in a simplified non – linear static analysis method for the evaluation of the seismic safety of existing masonry buildings. This method is also developed by the authors and will be described in a companion paper in a subsequent publication of this journal.
