Abstract
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) provides grants to Universities for research. This paper reviews support for research relating to masonry construction since about 1980 and describes its balance and emphasis. Recent initiatives in EPSRC support for research in the field of construction are introduced against the background of the outcomes arising from the White Paper ‘Realising our potential : A strategy for Science, Engineering and Technology’. The opportunities which these changes provide for universities, the construction industry and the manufacturers of masonry units to gain supportfor development of innovative and efficient masonry construction processes and forms are discussed.
