Abstract
Designers do not automatically consider combining masonry as facing and structure together and exploiting a number of other qualities such as durability, resistance to vandalism, acid resistance and low maintenance costs. The paper cites buildings and structures where a combination of these requirements has been met successfully including housing, offices, sports centres, farm buildings, bridge works and subways. In each case the total cost was competitive compared with alternative materials.
