Abstract
The paper examines aspects of workmanship which particularly appertain to calcium silicate brickwork. The importance of adopting the correct mortar mix and consistency for strength and durability is discussed. Aspects of masonry movement control are explored with regard to practical ways of reducing moisture movement, the role of mortars, the formation of movement joints and the use of bed joint reinforcement. Good and bad site practices are illustrated to show the effects on the finished brickwork. Simple precautions to reduce staining and colour variation are complemented by a discussion of cleaning techniques available.
