Abstract
Experimental and numerical analyses were carried out on damaged masonry shear walls subjected either to longitudinal or to diagonal compression and prestress forces in order to investigate the influence of the prestressing technique commonly used in the field of structural restoration. A nonlinear hypoelastic model, based on the finite element method, is proposed to simulate the experimental results obtained through an extensive testing programme on damaged masonry panels, subsequently prestressed. As the reliability of the model in simulating the experimental behaviour was proved, experimental results were extended by means of further numerical analyses. A correlation between the significant mechanical parameters and an “ideal” prestress force was obtained.
