Abstract
The size and shape of the cross-section of brickwork walls and piers is quantified in terms of the volume/exposed drying surface area ratio (v/s), and the time-dependent properties: creep, Poisson’s ratio, shrinkage and moisture expansion are expressed as functions of the v/s ratio. Using measured data from calcium silicate and clay brickwork, ultimate values are predicted and compared with previously published data in terms of the v/s ratio. While creep decreases with an increase in v/s ratio, shrinkage does not always follow the same trend.
