Abstract
The paper consists of case studies of disfigured facing brickwork and includes recommendations on how problems could have been avoided and/or possible remedial measures which might have been adopted.
Case 1. An end terrace dwelling in a conservation area had the front elevation and part of the gable wall coated with black paint. The paper describes the damage caused when the painted surfaces were removed by sand blasting and how the original surface could have been exposed using a paint remover in conjunction with an applied poultice as demonstrated on site. Case II. When dark coloured bricks are built into an otherwise light coloured wall the simple solution would appear to be to cut out and replace the offending units. The paper discusses the possibilities of tinting the bricks to produce a darker coloured wall and the alternative of tinting the darker coloured units to match the lighter ones.
Case III. Brickwork extensions frequently differ in appearance from the original building and weathering does not always fully resolve the problem. Tinting of bricks and mortar are discussed and long term effects considered.
