Abstract
Poor workmanship is not necessarily caused by poor craftsmen but is often the result of poor site management and design office inadequacies. Structural masonry demands a higher standard of workmanship than cladding masonry. To achieve it craftsmen must be motivated by explaining the needs and reasons. Working details must also be buildable and the specification practical. The designer must be clear in his own mind what standard of workmanship is necessary. In most cladding masonry only appearance and durability are important; in structural masonry strength is more important than appearance. In the last 25 years there has been improvement in masonry materials and deterioration in masonry construction due to changes in both site and design office management, personnel and training. Pride in craftsmanship still exists but needs encouraging and supplying with helpful, practical advice.
