Abstract
The acceptance of the harmonised European standards for masonry will automatically mean the withdrawal of the corresponding British Standards currently used in the UK. This paper reports on a Partners in Technology (PiT) project comparing the UK and European (CEN) methods of test for determining the compressive strength, dry density, bending tensile strength, moisture movement and water absorption of AAC masonry units. The information will assist manufacturers and end users alike to assess the significance of the values obtained when a masonry product is tested to the new European testing regime. Correlation factors that will be required to correct values used in structural design codes such as BS 5628:Part I are also provided. Some difficulties have been found with some parts of the European standards. Recommendations are made to achieve a reliable and repeatable test procedure.
