Abstract
The objective of the research carried out in ITC, an Institute of CNR (the Italian Council of Research), in cooperation with CTG, (the Italcementi Group Technical Center), was the evaluation of the performance of mortar based on a new masonry cement conforming to the type MC12.5 of the prEN 413-1. Thus, comparative tests were performed on reference wall samples made with perforated bricks and with three types of mortar having similar compressive strength and rheological properties by using the same sand but different binder content: masonry cement, cement, and cement-hydraulic lime. The outcome of the experimentation clearly shows that wall samples made with MC 12.5 masonry cement mortar have mechanical characteristics similar to those of samples made with cement and cement:hydraulic lime mortars, and yet, the use of the new masonry cement gave a mortar having a better initial workability that is maintained for a long period and has a lower capillary absorption coefficient.
