Abstract

Shrinkage of various shapes of calcium silicate brickwork and lightweight concrete blockwork is considered in terms of composite model theory. By measuring the shrinkage of brick, block and mortar samples, a reasonable agreement is obtained between measured and predicted masonry shrinkage. According to the composite model, vertical shrinkage of masonry is dependent on its shape and on the Quality and type of brick or block, while horizontal shrinkage is affected by the same factors plus creep especially in the case of brickwork.
