Abstract

The flexural resistance of masonry is determined by different methods in different countries. In the UK wallette testing is used and in other countries techniques include stack bonded piers tested as beams and the use of a bond wrench. Some of these techniques test every joint, and others involve testing one joint out of a variable number in each specimen. This paper discusses the theoretical and experimental relationships between the results obtained by different testing techniques for various masonry combinations. The influence of the method of flexural test adopted on British and Australian panel design techniques is examined and the feasibility of the bond beam as a site control test for masonry is considered.
