Abstract
A lot of buildings, both tenement and industrial ones, which exist in Polish cities, were erected towards the end of the 19th or at the beginning of the 20th century. Typical apartment buildings are four or five-stories, with basements and are built of traditional brick masonry construction and include foundations, external and internal walls, floors over cellars and balconies. Historical industrial buildings very often have, instead of internal walls, steel columns used as the main bearing structure. For many years these buildings were not subject to major repairs, assuming that they would be demolished and replaced by new constructions as the degradation proceeded. Nowadays, some of these buildings, due to their historical value, are to be restored. Based on the technical review of several tens of such buildings ideas how to assess and repair them are presented in this paper.
