Abstract
In the UK design rules for unreinforced laterally loaded wall panels, supported in various ways, have existed for a considerable time. The inclusion of movement joints in these panels will affect the support conditions and hence their load bearing capacity. To enable them to be designed, considerable detail on the subject of movement joints is included in BS.5628. However, over most of the remainder of Europe laterally loaded watt panels are not specifically designed because the building tradition ensures sufficiently thick sections not to need verification, so information on movement joints will not be as relevant although their correct inclusion is still essential. This paper assesses the movements of unreinforced laterally loaded masonry according to European and British Practice.
