Abstract
In the late 1980s, investigations took place to examine the use of autoclaved aerated concrete (Aircrete) blocks used between precast prestressed concrete inverted T beams to form a suspended floor. This paper examines the research behind the approval of Aircrete blocks in this type of construction for the UK market. A research project examining the floor system as a whole was undertaken on a purpose built laboratory test rig. The test programme was developed to examine the reaction to point loads at various stages of the construction process, as well as the completed floor. The work carried out justified the adequacy of the use of Aircrete blocks in suspended floors. It showed that tests on a rig incorporating joists and blocks provided a more accurate indication of loadbearing resistance of a floor than load tests on isolated units.
