Abstract
The history of the introduction and spread of the cavity wall is reviewed in the light of the reasons for it’s use and its performance in relation to the job it has to perform. Its strengths, weaknesses and problems are looked at and compared with alternative solutions.
All techniques of design and construction are subject, however, to a continuous process of change in the materials used, the techniques of construction and workmanship, the demands placed upon the fabric of buildings by the user, the requirements placed upon performance by legislation and, to some extent, by climatic changes. The performance of the cavity wall is reviewed in relation to contemporary design and usage and it is concluded that there is still some life in the concept.
