ABSTRACT
The use of individual sized aggregates collected from crusher wastes in the manufacturing of masonry units (MU) through alkali activation is presented in this paper. The influence of various binder to aggregate ratios of individual sized aggregates on the flowability of flyash based alkali activated mortar and the compressive strength of the masonry units, prepared with the same mortar is also reported on. Altogether 54 mortar mixes were prepared with six types of individual sized aggregates (ISA) and nine different binder to aggregate ratios (B/A). Properties such as specific gravity, density and percentage of voids of the individual sized aggregates were determined. The binder to solution ratio (B/S) of all the 54 mixes suitable for moulding building units were determined by conducting flow table test. Masonry units were cast using fixed binder to solution ratios and tested for compressive strength after curing for 7, 14, 28 and 56 days. It was found that with an increase in the binder to aggregate ratio, the binder to solution ratio increases for all the individual sized aggregates. Maximum compressive strength is attained at a certain point where the binder and aggregate affinity are good.
